What VST's to use?

Here's a list of some of the plugs Fedde, Funkerman and I use a lot for our synths and basses:

ReFX Nexus (2) - Has some nice presets (sample-based) and is very easy in its use. Negative: Not a lot of tweaking possibilities (you can do some modulation, LFO-ing and FX, but no real deep sound modeling possible. you have to tweak a lot with effects on the bus to get it to sound more personal.)

Arturia MiniMoog V - Has almost the same characteristics as the "real" Moog. We have a (hardware) Moog Voyager at the studio, but to be honest: we only kinda use this software version. Great for basses. Real deep/analogue sound.

Native Instruments - We use many of their products: Battery (for drumsampling), B4 II (for organ/drawbar), Massive (for pads and syths), Kore (for easy preset-skipping), FM8 (for the FM-based sounds). Negative: all Native plugs (except the sample-based ones like Battery and Kontakt) share the same characteristics. Kinda minimal-digital-sounding and it has some sort of industrial feel. Can be cool in some cases, but often misses warmth and depth.

Spectrasonics - Trilogy and Atmospere. Trilogy has some nice (sample-based) bass-presets and Athmosphere has some nice synths and pads, but also here we have the problem of no deep sound modeling possibilities. (ps: their Stylus RMX is great for beatmaking! You can import your own (rex) loops and skip easy between loops on the fly.)

Sonic Charge - Synplant. At the moment we are kinda experimenting with this plug. Its interface looks really funny, but you can very easily create unique sounding leads etc.

Sylenth Synth.
This little softy is a monster! Great for leads, pads and basses. Great interface for tweaking.

I hope this is of some help to you.
But I also would like to put out that I strongly believe that the most important instruments you can owe are your ears. The investment you take in listening carefully to stuff you like and in tweaking a lot with your gear, pays of in the choices of your initial sounds, the modeling you do and the mix you eventually make.

Yeah, a Virus sounds cool. We also have one over here.
But to be honest: we don't use it a lot... Nowadays with modern DAW's (Digital Audio Workstations) and when working with synth-plugins you don't have to make a sysex-dump of your synths and think about programchanges and mixersettings etc, because all presets and parameters will be saved with your project. Saves me time.
Yeah yeah, I know. I'm lazy.... ;)

It's true that the virus has been used in many trance songs, but there are a lot of other hardware synths like the gold old JUNO-106, JP-8080, NORDLEAD, Andromeda etc. that featured on many. But today you can also create similar sounds with the help of software synths like the Vanguard, the Sylenth (who even has a Virus-edition), REAKTOR etc.
So, I strongly believe you don't have to owe an expensive hardware synth to create those tranchey pads and leads anymore...

Yeah, the Trilian sure is a nice bass-synth. I always loved the Trilogy (still use it for subs from time to time).
Did you knew that registered users of the Mac version of Trilogy are allowed a free upgrade to Trilian? I don't think this is fair to the PC users, but what can we do...

I made an edit with Logic of 2 tracks. That is, I put a acapella under an existing song. The problem is that somehow the acapella sounds fat, distant and not part of the underlying song. I filtered some of the low-ends, but not too much, since it then really affects the sound. Furthermore, I added a compressor and a multicompressor on the channel strip. Who can give me some good advice how to resolve this problem and let the acapella blend in to the track more?

I think you should think more of other effects like reverbs and delays to blend the vocal more in the mix..
This acapella is from the stop playing with my mind track and has a lot compression on it by it self already..

Try to use reverb and you could also try to double the vocal on 2 channels and pan them both the opposide direction, this makes the vocal a more stereo kind a feel..

They are easy to use and they are cheap!
Also try a demo version of FX Pansion GURU, I like this one more than Battery 3 because of the interface and easy of changing you're drums when you play you're track.
